New inclusive playground equipment at Pocono parks

Six playgrounds in Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg feature the new inclusive equipment.

STROUDSBURG, Pa. — A rock climbing wall and slide are just some of the exciting play equipment you can find on the playground here at Creekview Park in Stroud Township, but not every child can enjoy it.

Realizing that the Kiwanis Club of the Stroudsburgs came up with the idea to offer new equipment.

"We set a goal of about $200,000, which we reached, and we were able to buy handicapped playground equipment for 6 community parks and were going to be installing a pavilion at Helen Amhurst Park," said Steve Gandley, Kiwanis Club of the Stroudsburg President.

Last year the club celebrated its 100th anniversary.

To commemorate it, the group wanted to do something for the community, specifically children.

"We knew that we needed to get some equipment into place for those people, and we thought about what the most popular playground equipment was, and of course, that's the swings and a merry-go-round," said Autumn Hawthorne, the executive director for Stroud Region Open Space and Recreation Commission.

The hope for this new equipment is to allow children of all ages and abilities to play with one another.

"Kids that are handicapped are limited on what they can do, and a lot of times they're on the sidelines watching other kids, and to be able to have handicapped accessible equipment, which by the way can be used by physically able kids in addition too it allows them to get involved," said Gandley.

"The six playgrounds that we choose are our most widely used playgrounds in the area. We see kids from every walk of life come out to these playgrounds. So it was important for us that they can interact equally with all," said Hawthorne.

The pavilion will be completed in the Spring.
