New camera system in Monroe County aims to ease traffic concerns

Work is underway to upgrade a series of cameras at several congested intersections.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — It's always a busy day at the intersection of Route 715 and Sullivan Trail in Tannersville.

But on this day it's busy because of something other than traffic.

Crews are installing a new camera system at the intersection to help ease traffic concerns.

The new cameras here are welcome news for Mike Maacks, who owns a food truck that's parked at a gas station along 715.

"I've seen a company put a detector in for traffic to see how much traffic comes through here. But you hit that light; you're at that light for 20 minutes. You know, I think it would be a phenomenal thing, especially for the outlets," said Mike Maacks, Bubba's Curbside Cravings.

This intersection is one of 10 in Pocono Township getting the camera upgrades.

Pocono Township Manager Taylor Munoz says this is a project that's been in the works for several years, "The adaptive signaling is a mixture of new hardware and software on each intersection that will allow traffic to flow more easily through the intersections."

The project will not just help with congestion in Pocono Township but also surrounding municipalities like Stroud Township.

Munoz says the upgrades will help ease traffic along the entire Route 611 corridor, "The idea in layman's terms is the lights will now speak to each other on the whole corridors, and it will just allow a greater easing of traffic flow, especially during high volume, you know, times."

Smithfield and Middle Smithfield townships are also getting upgrades to help along the Route 209 corridor.

All four townships received state grant money to pay for the new traffic cameras. The work is expected to be done in April.
