STROUDSBURG, Pa. — It's been nearly 9 months since 75-year-old Lloyd Leap was attacked while walking his dog outside the Monroe County Courthouse in Stroudsburg.
"I'm doing better but still there's a lot of pain and a lot that is not going to get better. But you have to learn to live with some of that," said Lloyd Leap.
A judge sentenced the man behind the attack, 43-year-old Adam Male of Saylorsburg, to time served and 21 months' probation.
Male also received 3 to 6 months in jail in a separate driving under the influence case.
But the Leap family says it's not enough.
"Well, I thought he would serve more time or at least go somewhere where he would get some help, but it didn't happen," said Leap's wife, Wanda.
"I mean what can you say, he got quite a bit of sentence, but it could have been more. I do look over my shoulder when I walk these streets right here," said Lloyd.
Police say back in February, Male punched Leap in the face, then shoved a second person on Main Street 15 minutes later.
Earlier this year at his preliminary hearing, this is what Male had to say about the attack…
"Just that it is not really me, just what happened or occurred. Or supposedly occurred,"
At sentencing, Male told the court that at the time of the attack, he was not taking his mental health medications.
Joining the hearing via Zoom, he apologized to the Leap family.
"I will take my mental health seriously, so this doesn't happen again."
Leap suffered several injuries to his face, a broken wrist, and a sore neck. His wife and son read victim impact statements to the court saying their lives haven't been the same since.
"I felt nervous, but I am glad I said it because that is how I felt. I mean he messed our life up; we couldn't go on vacation or anything," said Wanda Leap.
Male will serve his sentence in the Monroe County Correctional Facility.
