Keeping cool at Smithfield Beach in Monroe County

It's another scorching hot day in the Poconos. Newswatch 16's Emily Kress takes us to Smithfield Beach, where many people are trying to stay cool.

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — Along the Delaware River in Monroe County, people spent their Friday on their kayaks soaking up the hot summer sun.

Newswatch 16 found lots of people going for a swim just off the shoreline at Smithfield beach near Marshalls Creek.

"I was following my dad. I was trying to catch up to him, but he keeps going further, and I have to chase him," said Sarah Heagerty of Broomall, Pennsylvania.

The Lochansingh family from East Stroudsburg walked the beach to find the perfect spot with some shade before going for a swim.

"Perfect way to cool down, less crowd, the weekdays are very mild," said Rodney Lochansingh.

The Rivera family from Leman Township had the same idea: to find some shade to beat the heat.

"We wanted to get away from the house because it is so hot in there, and we don't have a central air system, so instead of being at home, I said, 'let's take mom to the park for some fresh air under the trees,'" said Juanita Rivera.

Summer is just getting started, and people at Smithfield Beach said this heat wave may be a sign of what's in store for the rest of the summer.

"Well, if it is, we are in trouble. If it's not, then you know what only God knows. We accept it with grace and just move it along," added Rivera.

"I get the season pass, every year I get the season pass; it's going to be a really hot summer," said Lochansingh.

People who came out to Smithfield Beach say they expect a much larger crowd over the weekend.
