Keeping an Eye on the Frozen Delaware River

KITTATINNY POINT, NJ -- Spring is just over a week away, but there is still a lot of ice along the Delaware River.

"We've never seen this much ice on the river and this much sheet ice in the certain areas of the river," Kathleen Sandt of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area said.

Sandt says it is the most ice she's seen on the river in nearly 20 years.

"What we're concerned about right now is how all this ice is going to thaw and where it's going to go," Sandt said.

At the Kittatinny Point section of the Delaware Water Gap along the Pennsylvania and New Jersey line, park officials say the ice is between 18 inches and three feet thick.

"One of our rangers did some math and calculated it out conservatively that there's about 1.5 billion gallons of water just locked up in the ice on the river right now. That's a lot of ice," Sandt said.

With the sun out and the warmer temperatures you can already see the ice is starting to melt along the river.

Park officials want people to know if you plan on fishing, you have to play it safe.

"It's looking very good. Maybe we'll have some luck," one fisherman said.

Two fishermen from New Jersey were surprised to see there's still so much ice this late in the season.

"Normally we're all in boats at this time of the year. Yeah, really this is like so unusual," Ed Harabin said.

Officials with the park service say they are monitoring the river levels three times a day. They are also comparing that information to data received on computers.

"Any types of changes we're looking for right now so that we can track them and so we can see if there will be any issues," Sandt said.

Officials say there have been no ice jams or flooding. They're hoping it stays that way as it gets warmer.
