Kamala Harris' potential to make history

Vice President Kamala Harris is the clear front runner for the Democratic nomination following the president's decision to bow out of the race.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — Who will become the new Democratic nominee in the race for the White House?

That's the question on the minds of people across the nation following President Joe Biden's announcement that he is dropping out of the presidential race.

The President endorsed his Vice President, Kamala Harris, for the role, but voters in Monroe County are split on the possibility.

"I don't think no one's going to be a fan of a girl running for president, and that is just the way the world is, not that I have anything towards girls, but I just think it's not going to be a good look," said Chapel Jones of Pocono Summit

"I'd like to see her better than Biden. I mean, his track record is not the greatest; it really isn't. A lot of the times I'm watching the news, and I can't understand what he's saying," said Jack Rodriguez of Effort.

The Monroe County chapter of the NAACP does not endorse political candidates, but President Christa Caceres says the potential nomination for Vice President Harris carries a lot of weight.

"And let's be clear, the vice president's job is to step in when the president can no longer do the job, so she's more than qualified, and we are just excited at the prospect of making more history one office at a time," said Caceres.

Caceres says during this unprecedented political climate, the NAACP of Monroe County is focusing on humanity and respect while also looking ahead to the future of the United States.

"There is room for conversation, there is room for elevation and that is really the only way to bring the temp down. It's very easy to fan flames in a political season, especially when we are talking about electing a president," explained Caceres.

Voters tell Newswatch 16 they agree that Vice President Harris has the potential to make history in the White House.

"It's about high time we have a woman in charge in the United States. Women in power has been building for a while; it has been saving us and helping us and mothering us and showing us a way forward," said Brent Reid of Mount Pocono.
