Grand jury: No charges against troopers in Monroe County overpass shooting

State police say they shot Christian Hall after he pointed a firearm at them. It happened on December 30, 2020, on an Interstate 80 overpass.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — A federal grand jury has recommended against criminal charges for state police or anyone from the Monroe County district attorney's office in relation to the shooting of a man on a highway overpass.

State police say they shot Christian Hall, 19, after they pointed a firearm at them. It happened on December 30, 2020, on an Interstate 80 overpass in Hamilton Township.

The Monroe County DA ruled the shooting justified in March of 2021.

Attorneys for Hall's family filed a lawsuit and said that a federal grand jury would investigate the shooting.

Attorney Ben Crump confirmed on Wednesday that the grand jury did not recommend charges.

Here is Crump's statement:

"The Hall family thanks the DOJ for investigating Christian’s homicide. The family understands and respects the DOJ’s decision. The lack of a federal criminal prosecution does not mean that a crime has not been committed. Rather, it means that the conduct in question is not believed to violate federal law. Unfortunately, while clear and sufficient evidence exists to support a criminal conviction for the violation of Pennsylvania law, (First Assistant District Attorney) Michael Mancuso continues to use his authority to block the prosecution and to protect those in our government who engage in wrongdoing."
