Gearing up for baby animal season in the Poconos

Squirrels are the first babies to make their way into the center this season.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — It's always feeding time at The Wilderz at Pocono Wildlife near Stroudsburg.

The center takes in injured and orphaned wildlife, but in just a matter of weeks, intern Olivia Asher says things will pick up, and all their cages will be filled with baby animals.

Squirrels are the first babies to make their way into the center this season.

"When someone brings in any animal, we have them fill out this form. It basically gives us an idea of where they found it and what state they're in, and then we take it into our own intake, figure out what it needs, and then from there, it's very species-specific what type of formula will be used, how often we feel them," said Asher.

Last year, the wildlife center took in over 2,500 baby animals, and they're expecting to take in even more this season. That's why they're reaching out for your help for donations.

"We go through so much mixed greens, so many berries, and those are usually on the more expensive end of the grocery list. Those we definitely need. We need formula, and it can't just be baby formula. It has to be specific. So, if you go on to our Amazon wish list, we will have a whole slew of items and enrichment for the animals that come in," said Katie Lee, wildlife rehab intern.

Wildlife rehab officials say if you see a baby animal by itself, call the center before removing it from its habitat, and you should never feed them.

"Wildlife is part of the Pennsylvania community, and I think it's so important to help out, especially during baby season, because we all care about babies, and they're really cute too, so we just want to sure that the next generation of animals, the next generation of people get to have these kinds of interactions," said Lee.

Find out more about all the animals at Wilderz this Sunday at 11 a.m. on WNEP-TV's Pennsylvania Outdoor Life.
