Garden centers in the Poconos busy with peak planting season

Gardening experts say we're not out of the woods just yet with possible chances of frost.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — Garden centers in the Poconos are bustling with people getting what they need to fill their gardens or decorate their patios. Some customers say this isn't their first trip to pick out what they need.

"Standing fuchsias for my hummingbirds, patio planters, herb gardens, and hanging fuchsia baskets—probably about 15, 20 things altogether," said Deborah Cramer of Canadensis.

Staff at Stonewall Garden Center near Canadensis say plants and flowers from the greenhouses go quickly this time of year for peak planting season. Brian Wyckoff says Mother's Day weekend is always one of the busiest for the staff.

"They're looking to buy shrubs, annuals, perennials. It's a wonderful time to be out here," said Wyckoff.

Over at Ross and Ross Nursery near Mount Pocono, staff see the same trends. Owner Wayne Ross says while everyone is planting now, there's still a chance for frost until Memorial Day.

"It makes it a short summer, so people don't wait that long. But the old farmers, Memorial Day was when they would put their vegetables out," said Ross.

Gardening experts tell Newswatch 16 that the rainy weather we've seen this year will help make the planting season for the spring a little easier.

"It's been good for the plants because they bloomed really nice, and you don't really have an issue unless the plant is in the wrong spot or you water, and then we get a lot of rain," said Ross.

Experts say be ready to cover those plants if needed so they thrive throughout the summer.
