SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- An old resort was leveled by flames in the Poconos, and investigators are still trying to figure out how it happened.

The main building at what used to be Mountain Manor near Marshalls Creek burned to the ground Sunday night.

The resort has been vacant for about 10 years, and the Marshalls Creek fire chief says no utilities were hooked up.

The fire chief called in the alarm around 7 p.m. after he spotted heavy smoke in the area while he was responding to a car crash nearby on Interstate 80.

"I drove past the main end building. There was heavy smoke showing in the parking lot towards the right side of the structure. I saw heavy fire showing through the rear, and we made an attack from the exterior to interior and came out to the front side, but it was fully engulfed," said Chief Joe Luisi, Marshalls Creek Fire Department.

"It's sad. It's sad again that the place is not here any longer, and it's sad that this burned down. It's a shame," said John Stagen of Lords Valley.

Stagen says back in the day, he and his friends would stay and golf at Mountain Manor.

"It was a comfortable, homey type of place. It wasn't a very fancy resort, maybe in its day it was, but when we used to come here, it was very well run. They treated us very nicely," said Stagen.

No one was injured in the fire.

A state police fire marshal is expected to look for a cause.
