Floral fun this weekend in the Poconos

Newswatch 16's Emily Kress shows us the preparations ahead of the Pocono Garden Club's flower show.

TANNERSVILLE, Pa. — A decades-long tradition, all for the love of flowers, returns to Monroe County this weekend.

Members of the Pocono Garden Club have been unloading trucks filled with plants and flowers. It's all for the club's annual flower show at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Tannersville.

The tables quickly filled up ahead of the show this Saturday.

"These are mostly grown from our members, and this year, we have a great selection of native plants and an awesome selection of house plants, of perennials—shade or sun," said event co-chair Kathy Calligari.

"During COVID, people really became plant-happy, and we couldn't do more. So now, it is super-exciting, and when you walk through the plants, you'll walk through and buy something because you're just like, 'I have to have that because it's so beautiful,'" said co-chair Linda Long.

The flower show is the only fundraiser of the year for the Pocono Garden Club and organizers say money raised from the sale benefits more than just the club.

"We support food banks. We give to some local gardens. We give scholarships for kids to go to camp at Kettle Creek and Quiet Valley," Long added.

There will also be basket raffles, a market with gardening items, and guest speakers this weekend.

Organizers say the show gives the community a chance to see what club members have created. This year's theme is "The Beauty of America."

"Our members do floral designs and horticultural species, so you can come here and see the beautiful designs we've made—the horticultural species—and they do get judged by outside judges," Calligari added.

The Pocono Garden Club flower show opens at 10 a.m. Saturday and runs until 4 p.m.
