EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- Crews in Monroe County battled a fire early Thursday that ruined apartments and a salon.
Flames broke out at the place on South Courtland Street in East Stroudsburg just after 5 a.m. on Thursday.
Firefighters battled flames and bitter cold trying to get this blaze under control.
Fire officials think it all started in an apartment, spreading quickly and ruining several apartments and a first-floor salon.
"I opened my door and saw smoke coming out of his apartment and I just yelled his name and ran out of the house and called the fire department," Ingrid Cunningham said.
When they first arrived, firefighters thought someone may have been trapped inside and they frantically searched the building again and again. The fire chief says it's an awful thing to worry about
"Just gets a sick feeling in your stomach, I've got to send my guys in there to get him," said Acme Hose Company Fire Chief Dale Fetterly."
We spoke with one mother who thought her son was trapped in the burning building before she found him safe and sound outside with other residents.
"I'm relieved to see him," Sabrina Oslinker said. "I really was relieved to see my son because when someone told me he was hurt, I just did not know what to say. I'm relieved to see my son."
State police are investigating the cause.
