Campers keeping cool in the Poconos

Athletes are used to competing in all types of weather: rain, snow, and, right now, the heat.

On the basketball courts at the International Sports Training Camp near Reeders, the fans are cranked all the way up.

This week, the facility in Jackson Township is hosting more than 300 campers from the tri-state area and beyond.

"We also have kids who fly in internationally and from around our country. They come in on Sunday, so some of them are used to the weather, and some of them aren't," explained camp director Kara Klaus.

Ayla Shaheem from New Jersey is one of those campers who are no stranger to the heat. She's spent the last nine summers here in the Poconos and always looks forward to keeping busy.

"I really like jet skiing on the lake, going the fields and playing soccer or basketball I really enjoy that," said Shaheem.

With the extreme temperatures going strong this summer, camp leaders are making sure staff are doing what they can to keep all of the campers cool.

"We had a whole training session yesterday with our counselors talking about the heat and the kids, signs to look out for any danger signs so we can get them immediately to the medical staff if they are overheating," said Klaus.

"We change the schedule so they are not out in the sun 24/7 so for example the field session, we move them to our covered space area, and we are making sure they are constantly hydrated and in the shade so it's not too hot for them in this weather," explained Anna Blackburn, resident life director.

During free time, campers get to decide what they want to do. Some found shade under the trees zip-lining, but most chose to make a splash in the lake.

"We take lots of water breaks, and we try to have breaks in the shade, and it's really nice to go in the boat house because it's air-conditioned," said Shaheem.

Camp officials expect the rest of the summer to be just as hot.
