Bear makes itself at home in Pocono rental

Guests at short-term rentals are the norm, but a pair of tourists in Monroe County had an uninvited visitor crash their stay.

TOBYHANNA, Pa. — What was supposed to be a relaxing getaway for Katiuska Disz and her friend at a short-term rental in Tobyhanna Township ended with an unexpected visitor.

"We were going out, going in, that's why we left the door closed just a little bit, and the bear put his nails on the door like this, and it magically opened. So yeah, yeah, it was scary like a terror movie."

She is talking about a black bear that made its way into the rental where they were staying.

Disz says she and her friend were checking out when they noticed the bear coming inside the home near Blakeslee.

"We left some garbage outside, and we thought maybe he wanted some food, and we took it out, put all the garbage inside in the house, and the bear was coming in the same way. As soon as we saw the bear coming to the door, we ran to the restroom and hid in the restroom."

Disz hid in the bathroom with her friend for 20 minutes until the police arrived. But by the time they got there, the bear already let himself out.

It's the first time she has ever seen a bear up close.

"Don't leave food outside," she laughed. "I guess that's why."
