Williamsport Juneteenth celebration expected to be monumental, emotional after becoming a federal holiday

Organizers are looking forward to their inaugural event on Saturday.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — "We're going to have two big banners that say who our sponsors are because a lot of money was given to put this celebration on,” said Kelly Anderson, the treasurer for the Lycoming Tri-County NAACP.

The Lycoming Tri-County NAACP is a multi-racial civil rights organization founded 112 years ago.

Anderson was explaining what folks can expect this Saturday at Brandon Park in Williamsport for their Juneteenth celebration.

Anderson says it the first time her organization commemorated Juneteenth here in the city.

“It's exciting because it's our heritage. It's where we come from. The history of slavery and the celebrating that we got freed. We built this country on our backs for free,” said Anderson.

President Biden made history by signing into law a bill that makes Juneteenth a federal holiday.

Anderson says that will make the day so much more significant for those attending Juneteenth.

“Laughter, tears, dancing, rejoicing,” said Anderson.

Juneteenth is the first national holiday since the government recognized Martin Luther King Day in 1983.

Gerald Smith, who served as president of the NAACP here in Williamsport for 14 years, says it's time to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday.

“Right now is the time. You know, it's a moment in history. It's been almost 40 years since we had our last,” said Smith.

In Williamsport, excitement for this monumental day is spreading fast. At a M & T Bank in the city, the sign says the bank will be closed in recognition of Juneteenth.

“I think it's great because many people don't know the history behind it,” said Mikayla Bryant.

The Juneteenth celebration in Brandon Park will run from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Before the event, there will be a prayer service at the Freedom Road Cemetery at 9 a.m. for the Black Civil War soldiers buried there.
