MUNCY TOWNSHIP -- Globs of vegetable shortening were smeared all over a road near Muncy Wednesday morning.
PennDOT closed that road for hours while they tried to figure out where the shortening came from and how to clean it up.
PennDOT spread a thick layer of sand over the portion of Lycoming Mall Road, but the road was still slippery from the soybean oil.
Muncy Township police believe a truck traveling to the Kellogg's plant just outside Muncy may have leaked the substance onto the road just before 7 a.m.
"Grease on your kitchen floor is what it seems like," said PennDOT official Ken Wilcox.
"(It) runs about a four-mile stretch before it dissipates," Wilcox added. "We have crews at every intersection closing the roadway to eliminate accidents or any hazards."
The state Department of Environmental Protection took samples while PennDOT detoured traffic around Lycoming Mall Drive.
PennDOT allowed people to park their cars on one side of the spill and walk under the bridge into Muncy Township to go to work.
"It's like driving on a snowy day. Put sand down, anti-skid, no big deal," said Dave Snyder.
Drivers were detoured, but as for Snyder, he didn't want to wait.
"I'm dedicated. I am dedicated to this job," he said.
So much so, that he decided to walk from one end of the road closure to the other.
"I was over at Hyundai Honda and Toyota. I had to walk the whole distance. Now I'm going back to Ford and dropping this stuff off," Snyder explained.
When we asked PennDOT, they said they have never seen a spill like this one before.
The road has been reopened.
