Thrift pop-up in Lycoming County helps women and their families

Newswatch 16's Mackenzie Aucker stopped by a pop-up consignment shop in Lycoming County that also helps women and their families.

MONTOURSVILLE, Pa. — Children's and women's clothes fill a room in the Savoy Plaza in Montoursville. Ten years ago, Chrissy Weaver opened Common Threads, a consignment shop in Lewisburg. Now, she's hosting her first pop-up sale in Lycoming County.

Weaver says there's a little something for everyone.

"We focus on spring wardrobe-type items—swimming suits, shorts, t-shirts—in the spring, and then in the fall, we do winter clothing," said Weaver.

Weaver says she started Common Threads to help mothers supplement their incomes.

"I love the idea of resale, and that whole recycling idea that it's kind of a mom-to-mom shop, I can sell things that my children gently used and other moms can make use of it and it's not going in the landfill somewhere."

Shoppers say it's not only nice to recycle their old items but also to buy new essentials without a hefty price tag.

"It was wonderful. It was great to be able to see my clothing go to another mom that could use it, and for a great price, and then it was also great to shop and find things my kiddos needed," said Jennifer Reppert, Team Thread member.

"It benefits the families who are able to get rid of their gently used items and then it benefits us to get them nice items at a really nice price," said Kara Smith of Montoursville.

Weaver says the idea for a pop-up was born out of growing demand for more thrift shops in the Montoursville area.

"I was drawing a large crowd, both consignors and shoppers from this area, and I've been looking to put a location up here for a number of years, and finally, I found a spot that would rent to us short-term."

The last day for Common Thread's spring sale is Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. A large number of items will be discounted.
