Salvation Army in Williamsport is facing a shortage of supplies

As Newswatch 16's Chris Keating reports, the organization lacks hygiene products to distribute to families in need.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The hygiene shelves at the Salvation Army in Williamsport are bare. The organization provides those items to families in need. But due to demand, it has been hard to keep up.

"With the hygiene closet, over the last couple of months, the need has kind of doubled. We have gone from helping ten families a month to about 25 or 30," said Salvation Army Maj. Sheryl Hershey.

The organization is asking the community to help out and donate this holiday season.

"Our closet still needs things like shampoo, hair rinse, body wash, deodorants, toothpaste, laundry detergent—those kinds of things."

They are preparing for that need to grow even more as we approach Christmas. The food shelves are full now, but they won't be like that long.

"Once we pack our Christmas food boxes, we anticipate to have empty food shelves come January. The food pantry will probably need to be completely re-supplied," Hershey said.

In addition to Christmas boxes, the organization is also asking for turkey donations to give out for the holiday.

"It would be great if we could get the community involved and have them donate a turkey to us for the Christmas season. We are hoping to get 500 turkeys."

If you have any hygiene or food donations for the Salvation Army, you can drop them off at their office along Market Street in Williamsport.
