Red kettle season starting this week

The Salvation Army Williamsport chapter held its annual kickoff breakfast for the fundraising season.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The local Salvation Army Chapter in Williamsport kicked off its fundraising season with the fifth annual Red Kettle Breakfast .

"This is the kickoff to the holiday season. We begin ringing bells tomorrow morning. So, tomorrow you will see us at several stores in the Williamsport area and we are excited and hope people donate as they walk by," said Maj. Sheryl Hershey.

The organization in Williamsport says more people have signed up to be bell ringers this season than the previous few years. However, more volunteers are always welcomed.

"So, we are always looking for volunteers who would be willing to cover Fridays and Saturdays or if you like a Monday and Tuesday that would be awesome," said Hershey.

The Salvation Army hopes to raise $96,000 this season. Through donations and sponsors, the kickoff breakfast raised $45,000 alone.

"We use it to pay for our programs throughout the year, not only Christmas. But this year we are looking to help a little bit over 400 families this year for Christmas with food and toys," she added.

The event also honored Russell Reitz. Reitz has been involved with the Salvation Army for more than 28 years. He received a Certificate of Membership Emeritus.

"It means a lot. Because I spent so many years serving... all those years I gave and gave and gave and continue to give," said Reitz.

"He has done so much for the Salvation Army volunteering to sit on our board of advisors. He does a wonderful job, and he helps the Williamsport area so much," Hershey stated.
