Lycoming SPCA close dog kennels due to parvovirus outbreak

The shelter is not allowing any adoptions after two dogs tested positive for parvovirus.

LYCOMING COUNTY, Pa. — The dog kennels at the Lycoming County SPCA are closed. This comes after two dogs tested positive for the Canine Parvovirus.

"We had a dog come in around the 28th of November. Unfortunately, he was positive for parvovirus, and we ended up having additional exposure for another dog," said Joel Harris, the SPCA director of development.

Symptoms of the parvovirus can easily be spotted. Affected dogs need to be treated immediately.

"It is just a highly contagious virus that spreads amongst dogs. Some of the common symptoms are lethargy, weight loss, and vomiting," Harris added.

The SPCA says adoptions and dog intakes are not allowed at this time. The sick dogs have been taken to the vet to be treated and quarantined. SPCA staff members are caring for the remaining dogs.

"All the other dogs have been tested, and they are okay, and their health is fine, and their boosters and shots are current," Harris stated.

Officials at the Lycoming County SPCA say the kennels are set to reopen on December 23rd as long as no more dogs test positive for the virus.

Now the SPCA needs the community's help paying for the medical bills of the affected dogs.

"We don't know exactly what the medical bill will be, how much it will cost, or what type of intensive care they might need. So, if anyone wants to support to help offset this cost that we did not expect to have then you are more than welcome to make a donation to our healthy homeless pets campaign," said Harris.
