MUNCY, Pa. — Every first responder and veteran has their own story to tell.
Travis Harman wrote a book, "Remote Outpost," about his time serving in Afghanistan with his father in 2008.
Now, he wants to help other veterans and first responders share their stories.
"I'm a writer by trade and went to school for writing. I have an MFA from Wilkes University, and I was doing writing groups for veterans and first responders, and it was going pretty well, so I decided why not combine the two and make my promise to the vets and first responders," said Travis Harman, Joker's Promise founder.
Harman served in the Pennsylvania National Guard for 13 years. He was part of the 103rd Regiment out of Lewisburg and retired as a staff sergeant. Harman recently started up the non-profit Joker's Promise.
"With our non-profit, we provide these notebooks, a nice Joker's Promise notebook, and a pen," said Harman.
He drew inspiration from being a part of the group Veteran's Promise, based out of Dickson City.
"We run the writing groups and we have music groups as well cause I'm a musician as well, and instruments are provided, we've had a few donations here and there and I have a few instruments that no instruments are needed to show up and play with us," said Harman.
The main purpose of Joker's Promise is to help our nation's heroes document their stories.
"And we will interview them and then write a first-hand account for them from their point of view; we will deliver that to the veteran or first responder, and it is up to them whether they seek to get it published, which we can assist with or if they just want to keep a copy for themselves or maybe they wanna let their friends or family in on it," said Harman.
The nonprofit will also provide instruments and writing materials. Harman is currently looking for veterans and first responders to join and plans for the group to start up next month.
"We're looking for as many people as we can get. We won't turn anyone away. Like I said, we can always expand, and that's our aim: to give back and to help those in need," said Harman.
