WILLIAMSPORT -- The "Cruzin' for Victory" campaign bus pulled up to NuWeld in Williamsport and moments later, Photographer Tom Durant and Reporter Nikki Krize were on board.
Senator Ted Cruz came to Williamsport to speak to a crowd of about 600 people at the town hall event.
Before the speech, he spoke directly with Newswatch 16 about jobs, natural gas drilling and the economy. What we really wanted to ask him about is his relationship with Donald Trump.
"People are tired of candidates who don't tell them the truth, who are just saying what they think the voters want to hear," Cruz said.
Cruz believes we are going into a contested republican convention, which means nobody will get the majority of the delegates needed to guarantee the republican nomination.
"I'm going to have a ton of delegates. Donald Trump is going to have a ton of delegates. It's going to be a battle to see who can earn the support of the majority of the delegates who have been elected by the people," Cruz said.
When I asked Cruz what would happen if Trump is elected, he said with confidence, Hillary Clinton would win by double digits.
"If I'm the nominee, we win. We win key swing states. Right now Hillary and I are tied in the state of Pennsylvania. Donald is losing to Hillary, I am tied with Hillary and will beat Hillary in the general election of Pennsylvania," Cruz said.
Another topic that came up during our talk is gender neutral bathrooms. Donald Trump publicly supports them. Cruz is against the idea which he says is not political.
"I'm the father of two daughters who are five and eight. It is basic common sense that a grown adult man, a stranger, should not be alone in a bathroom with a little girl," Cruz said.
Senator Ted Cruz spoke to a crowd of about 600 people at NuWeld in Williamsport about jobs, freedom and security.
Cruz covered a lot of topics, but what he wanted to talk about first, was jobs. He says if he is elected president jobs and economic growth will be his number one priority.
“As president, Ii will repeal every word of Obamacare, will pass a simple flat tax and abolish the IRS,” said Cruz.
He believes the effect of all of that will be strong.
“We're going to see millions and millions of new high paying jobs coming back to America. We're going to see manufacturing jobs coming back to Pennsylvania, coming back from China, coming back from Mexico,” added Cruz.
Another topic Cruz discussed was the state of the natural gas industry. “Pennsylvania is an energy state. I represent Texas, another energy state. We've seen when things are really good, but people are struggling right now. The prices of natural gas and oil have dropped dramatically. A big drive of that has been the fed's unstable dollar policies."
Cruz is confident he will be a better candidate than his opponent Donald Trump.
“One of the reasons, Nikki, that we're seeing republicans unite behind our campaign is because in my time in the senate, every day I did two things: tell the truth and do what I said I was going to do."
When asked what would happen if Trump is elected, he said Hillary Clinton would win by double digits.
