WILLIAMSPORT -- If you're looking for a good place to watch the fireworks in Williamsport just look for the big American flag. It shouldn't be hard to spot because the one in Billtown is said to be the largest free- flying American flag in the world.
"It's very moving to me to have this presented like this. It's a big thing,"
One look at Christine Manny's patriotic apparel, you can tell she likes to go big for the fourth of July.
"I like to go all out, yes,"said Manny.
But there is something in Williamsport that is making an even bigger statement.
"Goosebumps, goosebumps just to see it go up like that," said Manny.
At 114-feet wide and 65-feet high, this is said to be the largest free-flying American flag in the world.
"There are flags larger the ones they put over the football fields but they don't fly,” said Dan Farr.
Each stripe is five feet wide. Each star is four feet from tip to tip. With help from nearly 175 volunteers, the flag is lifted once a year on the Fourth of July by two cranes along the river walk in Williamsport
"What do I think about the flag? Just look at it it's amazing, it's humongous," said Master Sergeant Chris Lownes from the Army National Guard.
After borrowing the flag from a VFW post in North Carolina back in 1998, a group of investors bought it for Backyard Broadcasting in Williamsport.
"I could watch it all day long," said Michael Seitzer.
This year the VFW in DuBoistown paid to repair old glory before the crowd of about 30,000 shows up for the fireworks in Billtown.
"All the people that have committed their lives to this flag flying I think people need to understand this is what it's about right here," said Seitzer.
"Bombs bursting in air rockets’ red glare. When that part comes over the loud speaker you will see the bombs bursting in air and the rockets’ red glare is behind the flag. It's amazing,” said Farr.
An amazing tribute the city and Backyard Broadcasting will continue to honor every year on the Fourth of July.
