Gang violence concerns after deadly shooting in Lycoming County

Last weekend's deadly gang-related shooting is still sending shockwaves throughout the community in Lycoming County.

LYCOMING COUNTY, Pa. — "It was unbelievable that we could have such a thing occur here in our little town of Loyalsock Township," said Vito Sylvester.

Vito Sylvester of Loyalsock Township says last weekend's deadly gang-related shooting is still sending shockwaves throughout the community.

"The child that was killed was going to the school where we play pickleball at. Because of that, we weren't able to use the school this week. It's basically been shut down," added Sylvester.

15-year-old Ahmeen Palmer was shot Saturday night in a parking lot near Williamsport. He died at the hospital.

On Thursday, investigators announced the arrest of 37-year-old Johneice Legare in connection with the deadly shooting. She faces charges related to hindering apprehension.

The day after the deadly shooting, shots were fired at an apartment complex near Loyalsock Township High School. This prompted the district to close on Monday.

In a statement to Newswath 16, the Loyalsock Township School District Superintendent says quote, "We hope the crimes committed over the past weekend are solved in the very near future. If a student has a concern in our schools, they should immediately contact the teacher, principal, or our school police officer."

The superintendent also tells us he does not believe there is any gang activity in the district but says officials cannot control what takes place outside of school grounds.

"Sometimes in Williamsport, you might have something like that, but it's pretty rare to see something like that, especially so close to the school," said Eben Manning of Loyalsock Township

Eben Manning and Ryan Schriner say it's hard to think these kinds of crimes happened in such a small community. Both say they'll be a little more cautious from now on.

"I think everybody's a little worried. I mean all my coworkers, family, everybody seems pretty paranoid. The school is definitely on high alert right now," added Manning.

"Well, I mean, it kind of proved that it doesn't matter where you are or anything can happen. So just cause you're on Main Street, like Golden Strip, doesn't mean you can't have something bad happen, so just kind of always keep an eye out," said Ryan Schriner from South Williamsport.

According to the Lycoming County District Attorney, investigators do have suspects in the deadly shooting, and the investigation is ongoing.
