WILLIAMSPORT -- The former Williamsport police officer involved in deadly crash in 2014 will face no jail time.
Jonathan Deprenda pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in court on Thursday after apologizing to the victim's family.
The former Williamsport officer now faces five years of probation after his cruiser crashed into James Robinson's car in 2014, killing the man.
Robinson's family not only agrees with the sentencing but forgives the former officer.
Deprenda was charged with homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter for his involvement in a fiery crash in the city in 2014.
Troopers say Deprenda collided with James Robinson's vehicle on East Third Street while on his way to help another officer.
Robinson's vehicle crashed into a house and caught fire. He was killed.
"He was my best friend from another mother. We did music together. We were best friends from children," said John Hernandez.
In court, Deprenda pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and now faces five years of probation.
The former officer gave a heartfelt apology to Robinson's family and friends saying, "every night when I close my eyes, I see this man in this car I cannot help. I have to live with that for the rest of my life and I'm so sorry for that."
Robinson's family says the first time Deprenda apologized to them for his actions was at this sentencing. Their reaction was forgiveness.
"I raised my kids to forgive those who do things against you, and it's something James would have did. So I had to forgive him," said the victim's mother Nancy.
"I forgive him because the love of God I have showed me the errors and let it go."
Deprenda will also pay thousands for James Robinson's funeral expenses.
