Feds: New York man used fake IDs to get cash from local bank accounts

LYCOMING COUNTY, Pa. — A man from New York City has been charged with trying to get money from bank accounts in our area.

The United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that Jose Rodriguez, 62, of Bronx, New York, was indicted on Tuesday by a federal grand jury on charges of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft.

The indictment alleges that in December of 2023, Rodriguez utilized false identification documents to withdraw and attempt to withdraw roughly $50,000 from customer accounts at multiple banks throughout Lycoming, Tioga, and Centre Counties. The indictment indicates that Rodriguez unlawfully had the IDs of at least four bank customers in connection with the scheme.

Rodriguez could face a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and $1 million in fines.
