RALSTON -- Some people in Lycoming County got a bit of help as they are trying to pick up the pieces from the flash flooding almost two weeks ago. A disaster recovery center was set up Tuesday near Trout Run.
Roxann Shuman came to the Ralston Volunteer Fire Company for one reason: to get a tetanus shot. She was happy and relieved to hear they were being given out for free.
"I had a tetanus shot 10 years ago, but I came here for another tetanus shot just to be on the safe side. I know they're good for 10 years," Shuman said.
Shuman is just one of the many people affected by flash flooding in Lycoming and Sullivan Counties. She lives in nearby McIntyre Township, which was hit hard.
"I had brand new carpet out there destroyed. My tractor, tools, we watched a lot of stuff just float by and there was nothing we could do about it," Shuman said.
"It's heartbreaking when you go out there because it's a community area that we've all been in for years, and it's a beautiful little area, but now it looks like a war zone," Deb Sechrist said.
The Lycoming County Department of Public Safety is holding several mini disaster recovery centers in the hardest hit areas. In addition to free tetanus shots, there are other recovery programs.
"They can pick up well water test kits, they can talk to the county's assessment office to fill out forms if they have property damage to have their assessment reevaluated, as well as the department of public safety and PEMA are here," John Yingling said.
People were also able to get things like water and cleaning supplies from the Red Cross Disaster Relief vehicle.
"I think this is great that they're doing this for the community," Sechrist said.
