Annual Valentine's Day flower sale benefits firefighters

If you're still in need of a Valentine's Day gift for your special someone, a fire department in Lycoming County has you covered.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Dozens of roses sit on a table inside of a trailer in Beiter's parking lot in South Williamsport, all for the South Williamsport Fire Department's annual Valentine's Day Rose Sale.

"We started out in a tent in the middle of the parking lot, the job trailer is donated, the refrigerated trailer we store our roses in is donated, and Beiter's donates the space and the electricity for our fundraiser," Grover Danley said.

The fire department started the sale over 20 years ago as a way to raise money.

"It's been a pretty good sale, we end up meeting a lot of interesting people that come out and visit us when we're here," Danley said.

Each year, the fire department buys 250 dozens of roses to sell.

"Pastels which is assorted colors, they're by the dozens, one dozen is $30, two dozen is $50, and then we have the traditional reds for $35," Danley said.

This year, the fire department is adding carnations to its sale. Those bouquets are $25 a dozen.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards training and equipment. Firefighters say the sale typically raises about $3,000.

"When you look at a fire truck, or a rescue truck, or anything like that, you're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars for the equipment, so we have fundraisers like this so we can save up and hopefully buy one eventually," Danley said.

If you still need flowers for that someone special, the South Williamsport Fire Department will be at Beiter's parking lot Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 6 a.m. until supplies last.
