WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — 'Tis the season for holiday sale catalogs in our mailboxes and the gift guides in our inboxes. It doesn't matter how you get your mail; you're likely bombarded with gift ideas.
But before you make that impulse purchase, the Luzerne Foundation in Wilkes-Barre has some gift advice of its own.
"I mean, I have enough ties. I have enough ties. I have a large amount of sweaters. I'm good to go. How about a wish book donation? Would be lovely this year," said President and CEO David Pedri.
"The wish book is on the newer side for the foundation," explained Tara Mugford Wilson, Board Chair of the Luzerne Foundation. "And candidly, the staff came up with this idea last year, and it was impactful and exciting and interesting and different and really, really highlights the area nonprofits that may not get the recognition over time, throughout the year that they deserve."
You can find the wish book online or in a newspaper and readers are introduced to dozens of area nonprofits.
"Is it animal rescue that you're interested in? Is it Veterans Affairs? Is it Children's Theater? Any one of those things are in there, and many, many more," added Pedri.
You can learn more about how each group helps the community.
"I picture a grandparent taking this wish book and sitting down with their grandchild, reviewing it, looking over what stands out for you, talking about each of those nonprofits. That's what we should be doing here," said Pedri.
Whether the Wish Book inspires you to donate or to volunteer. The Luzerne Foundation hopes it influences community support well past the holiday season.
"The hope for the wish book is that the impact stays with the reader, and they see that there is so much good happening in our community and so many people, sadly, who have a need that maybe some of us have the ability to fix, and everybody's impact will be different, but it's nice to have an impact, and if they can't find something special during the holidays to want to be bigger than yourself, I encourage you to try anyway," added Mugford Wilson.
