WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — There is a lot to be proud of in this recently painted mural on Watson Street. Especially for Mayor Carl Kuren of Wilkes-Barre Township, as it captures a lot of what his township has to offer.
"The blueberry is where they had a blueberry dropped this year," Kuren explained. "The kid with the fish is for the fishing derby. I have had that for 24 years now, the fishing derby. Of course, that's the arena, the nut roll and poppy seed as a tradition for St. John's Church. They had that when I was a kid they used to make nut roll and poppy seed. So that's a long time."
This mural has been painted to celebrate the township's 250th anniversary.
Featured in the mural is Breaker Brewing Company, which is celebrating in its own way with a semiquincentennial pilsner.
"Well, it's been a pleasure to do business here since we started the town," said co-owner Mark Lehman. "Everyone here, for us to be here is really a great thing. Couldn't pick a better town."
The township will host a series of events later this month, on August 24th, to mark this momentous occasion.
"We hope everybody comes out to celebrate our event. And it will be a good day," added Mayor Kuren. "We have a parade that starts out in the front of the building. We have a little dedication there because there's a, we had a little monument there. And then we go through the town with the parade and then we go right up to the arena. And then of course we'll have a couple of celebrities make a couple speeches, I'm assuming."
The event will also feature several live musical performances, food, and games. More details can be found on the event's Facebook page here.
