Wilkes-Barre Old Fashioned 4th of July celebration

The celebration started at 12 p.m. on Thursday in Kirby Park. Newswatch 16's Jack Culkin shows us the full-day event.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — An old-fashioned 4th of July celebration was held in Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.

"I'm excited to hear the big booms," said Jocelynn Polashenski of Mountain Top.

The bangs and kabooms of fireworks kept families like Jocelyn Polashenski's hunkered down in Kirby Park for Wilkes-barres Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration.

"I've been coming to this firework show since my kids were very young, and they are 28 and 29 now," said Joe Novak of Mountain Top.

The yearly tradition kicked off at 12 p.m. on Thursday, and despite a little rain, the live music played on, entertaining the adults while the kids explored the amusement park rides.

"We come here; the kids enjoy it. Now we got the grandchildren coming so. We come to the dinner and the day out. Rain or shine," said Thomas Rushton of Sweet Valley.

Folks with a sweet tooth sampled chocolate and peanut butter-covered donuts from Joe's Mini Doughnuts, while Bulldog Barbecue catered to those looking for something savory.

"We have brisket pulled pork and ribs and then, of course, the classic sides that go with barbecue; it's a steady crowd during the day, then of course he gets busier as the evening goes on," said Vincent Balint, Bulldog Barbecue Owner.

Despite some late evening showers, hundreds still made their way to the park for a night filled with fun, food, and, of course, fireworks.
