Toys for children of parents in treatment

An organization in Luzerne County is collecting toys to send to treatment centers for children whose parents are working on their battle with addiction.

PITTSTON TOWNSHIP, PA — Outside a storage unit in Pittston Township, Katrina Gentner is going through all the toys she's collected over the past two months.

"Most of this stuff came from people in recovery because they can relate, and they've all been there," said Gentner.

By "there," Gentner means a treatment center where the toys will be sent to patients who have children at home.

"We're going to bring them to the rehab. The parents are going to wrap them and send them out to the kids so they get gifts from their actual parents," explained Gentner.

It's all thanks to a toy drive by Our Brother's Keepers Foundation. The organization was started by Gentner in 2022 in honor of her brother.

"Being that I was one of those parents at one point in my life, I know that they're going to feel a little bit better about themselves, and it's going to be a huge empowerment to their self-esteem in the beginning of their recovery, so I think it's huge for them," added Gentner.

Which is why she is thrilled with this response.

"The first year we've been doing it, and we've been doing it for about two months, and so far we've come up with this, and we have a couple other boxes out that we're going to pick up on Friday," said Gentner.
