Timeless tales at annual book sale in Wilkes-Barre

Despite developments in technology and the internet, many say nothing beats a book.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Thousands of adventures and opportunities at your fingertips are up for grabs under a tent in Wilkes-Barre at the 47th annual Osterhout Free Library Book Sale on South Franklin Street.

"Some people not only come from the books, they come for the conversation. They come to see their neighbors," said co-chair Kathleen Hannon. "You'll look around the tent during the days and some people are really looking into their books, and then others have armfuls of books. But they're in like, little groups, and they're talking, and they've seen their neighbors. And so, it's like a fiesta, the wave of the fine arts. This is the tent sale fiesta."

"I think we've been here every year," said Sarah Cragle. "It's for a good cause, and it's good prices for the books, so it's nice to come out, lots of people."

There are more than 65 categories of books at the sale that benefits the library. People say they choose books over electronic alternatives for many reasons.

"I think it's nice to have something in your hand that you can always go back to," Cragle said. "A book you're always going to have with you, you know, something you can hold, you can write down in it."

Non-readers can still come out and support the library.

"Even if you're not a reader, which we hope you are, the non-reader can come and find something in here as a CD, a DVD or game or puzzle," said Linda Kubiak, president of the Friends of the Osterhout Free Library.

The sale continues through Saturday.
