PLAINS, Pa. — There is the Westminster Dog Show, and then there is WNEP's version of it. We are featuring just some of the dogs currently available for adoption at SPCA of Luzerne County. They are all volunteer favorites because of their big ears and smile, softest coat, fun personality, and simply because of just how cute they are.
"Whether they've been here for a long time, whether they are the most improved. We love seeing all of those things, so it's really important to us to showcase these dogs any way we can because their loving and forever family could be out there," said volunteer Taryn Talacka, SPCA of Luzerne County.
Shelters all across Northeastern and Central PA are full, and adoptions are down. Volunteers at SPCA of Luzerne County are hoping to get the word out about what can be done to keep dogs out of shelters, including spaying/neutering and microchipping. They also say to make sure you research the breed before you make the commitment.
"I want to increase awareness of some of the difficulties shelters and rescues are facing now. Shelters are beyond full, adoptions are not where they want them to be, and I just want people to see the show, open up their hearts and minds, and think about adopting a pet instead of purchasing them," said Dr. Kimberly Hanley, a volunteer with SPCA of Luzerne County and a local veterinarian.
Not only do rescue workers want to see more dogs getting adopted, but they also want to see fewer animals coming in altogether.
If you are interested in adopting any of the dogs we featured on the Un-Westminster Dog Show on Newswatch 16 this morning, click here. SPCA of Luzerne County will be hosting a "jump into summer" event throughout June. Starting Monday, June 3, and running through June 21, all adoptions will be reduced to half-price.
SPCA of Luzerne County will be hosting a Rabies and Microchip Clinic next Saturday, June 8, from 11 am-2 pm at Green Dog Bakery located in the Midway Shopping Center, 1024 Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming. It is cash only: $10 for a rabies vaccination and $25 for microchipping.
We feature a new pet to adopt every Friday on 16 To The Rescue on Newswatch 16 at 5.
