Storm cleanup underway in Luzerne County

Power is still out in parts of Luzerne County, and the cleanup of downed trees is still underway following strong storms Saturday night.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — A lot of heavy lifting had to be done all around Harveys Lake after storms with strong winds came through and downed several trees Saturday.

"This is our third one today. We're trying to get them as quickly as possible because, as you can see, with the proximity to the road and how tight it is here at the lake, we try to get them in and out as quickly as possible," said Adam Tomassacci, Tomassacci Tree.

Uprooted trees and trees snapped right in half could be found in spots all along Lakeside Drive and side streets as well.

People who live here say much of this damage happened in what felt like an instant

"It came through very fast, heavy hail, strong winds, rain was actually going sidewards," said Jim Muratt, Harveys Lake.

"We've seen storms, and we've had trees come down and limbs, but never something like that," said Rod Kuhns, Harveys Lake.

The winds ripped a row of pine trees down at Rod Kuhns' home, taking out power and totaling his boat trailer, "It took the bimini off the boat, so that's going to be a loss as well, but there's no other damage. We didn't lose anything on the house or the garage or anything like that, so we're fortunate," he said.

While many are relieved, the damage is not worse. They are still surprised by the strength of the storm.

"We do often get storms, but nothing ever like this. This was really wicked," said Muratt.

According to UGI's outage map, around 200 people are still without power in Luzerne County; there is no word yet on when it will be restored.
