Raising awareness, sharing resources on autism

Newswatch 16's Chelsea Strub spoke with a parent who is working to spread awareness and offer support for families with children of all ages on the spectrum.

DALLAS, Pa. — Parenting Autism United moved to its new location in Dallas last month. Lindsay Dragon started the nonprofit to provide a space and programming for families needing support.

"Our area that we have created here is designed for all ages and all abilities tailored to autism," Dragon said.

Dragon's son was diagnosed with autism in 2016. She says at that time, there wasn't a lot of awareness for it in the community, let alone resources.

"There weren't a whole lot, and so when COVID hit, it kind of just depleted even more. You see a lot of programs come and go because it's a lack of participation so they're not going to host them if people don't go."

Dragon says as a thirst for knowledge of opportunities for these families grows, more groups are able to sustain their programs. It makes spreading the word about organizations like hers and others important to families.

"Knowing that we're here is half the battle, and then there are so many events coming up," Dragon said.

This weekend, Parenting Autism United will host a free community day and silent auction at Wilkes-Barre Area High School to help spread the word about resources and support in the area.
