WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Walking through the door, arms filled with presents, employees with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield are helping make the holidays a little brighter for kids in Luzerne County.
It's a toy drive tradition that started nearly 10 years ago.
"It started as a small department that was collecting on their own, then we decided open it up to all of our employees," said Katie Kemmerer, regional manager of community affairs.
All of these gifts under the tree will go to kids at the Children's Service Center.
"A lot of these kids are in difficult situations so that is why we want to make sure we give back to the children that are part of our community," said Kemmerer.
Each child writes up a wish list, then the employees get shopping.
"I feel that everyone likes the little kids with toys. It's the 15, 16, 18 year olds that get a little lost in the shuffle," said Eileen Marsico, director of strategic client sales.
"I like to go through the list and see what different kids are asking for. Compared to the kids in my life who have a lot, these kids aren't asking for much," said Laura Pszeniczny, senior client manager,
Even though they've never met these kids, staff say it's heartwarming to know they're helping a family in the area.
"Oh, I wish I could see them when they are opening the gifts because you spend the time and they spend the time writing what they want and what they need. Some of the gifts are just so basic," said Marsico.
The staff at Highmark provide enough gifts to help more than 100 kids.
