WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — For nearly 40 years, teams from up and down the East Coast have traveled to Connecticut for the Eastern Region Junior Softball League Championships. In 2025, those teams will make a different trek. Luzerne County will now host those games.
"It means the eyes of the world are going to be right here on us in Luzerne County. This is our opportunity to show off who we are here in Northeastern Pennsylvania on behalf of the Luzerne Foundation. We're so proud to partner with these great organizations," said David Pedri with the Luzerne Foundation.
After Connecticut gave up the championship, officials with Luzerne County stepped in to show the county had everything needed to host the games.
"From its hotels, medicals, restaurants, and activities for families, we made it to the final three," said Bob Bertoni with PA District 16/31 Little League.
Teams from 10 states, including a host team from Luzerne County, will play at the Wilkes University Softball Complex.
"Anytime we can partner with the community, we're going to jump at the opportunity. So to be able to bring all those young kids to participate in a tournament like this and see our campus, it's a win-win for us," said Scott Musa, Athletic Director at Wilkes University.
The east region will have between 8 and 12 teams competing next year. The championship winner will play in the Junior League Softball World Series in Washington state. Officials say this new partnership will also be great for our young athletes.
"Our young girls will be able to see these athletes play. See some of the best athletes play right here in Wilkes-Barre. We hope it inspires them. We hope it encourages them to keep on playing and keep being involved with athletics," added Pedri.
The Eastern Region Junior Softball League Championships will begin on July 17th at the Wilkes University Softball Complex.
