Soaking in the last few days of summer

Many of those who had the day off from work or school spent the holiday enjoying the great outdoors at Frances Slocum State Park.

BACK MOUNTAIN, Pa. — Fall colors have yet to grace the leaves on the trees surrounding Lake Frances in Luzerne County's Back Mountain.

But the breeze in Kingston Township suggests the change of seasons is not too far away.

"You got that Fall breeze smell, you know, it's just, I don't want to say the vibe is fall, but yeah, it is," said Brady Strassman of Kingston, who spent the morning kayaking on the lake with his family.

"It's getting there. You can feel it in the air comin'. So, yeah, looking forward to it," added Robert Pembleton of Shavertown, also visiting the park with his family.

The mild breeze brought many out to Frances Slocum State Park, not only because of the day off of work, but because this could be one of the last few days to enjoy the sun out on the water.

"Getting in the last couple days of summer here before we settle into the fall routine. So looking forward to it," said Pembleton.

"My mom's big into kayaking, and you know what? Summer's coming to an end. She's a teacher. I'm growing up as days continue, and I don't have this genuine time to spend with my mother like that as I continue to get older. So I think that this was a great opportunity," explained Strassman. "I mean, look, the sun's out. It's nice weather, nice fall weather, I should say."

It's what comes after Fall that drives some not to skip the opportunity to venture outdoors.

"Get it all in. I say, you know, because winter is tough around here, so as much sun as you can get nice weather like this. I say, soaking it as much as possible," said Pempleton.
