Snow blankets Hazleton area

Newswatch 16's Andy Palumbo found drivers struggling on their Tuesday morning commute.

HAZLETON, Pa. — People in Hazleton woke up to a snowy scene at Broad and Church Streets in the middle of downtown.

Snow clogged roads, drivers slid, and some got stuck. A police officer pushed a car and helped clear the intersection.

One driver abandoned his car and walked to work.

Another decided to ride out the storm in a Turkey Hill parking lot in Sugarloaf Township.

"This ain't the first time I seen snow, but we don't get snow where I'm from. I'm from New Orleans. we don't get snow down there," said Arthur, an industrial warehouse mechanic.

"I was on my way to work, but I got stuck in the snow twice. a Guy had to pull me to the gas station."

The job has to wait until the snow stops.

"While most people saw this the snow as a major nuisance, others look at it as a way to make a living."

We met John Blase and his snowplow in the parking lot of a shopping center in West Hazleton during part of a very long day.

"Just start early and keep going at it," Blase said.

Blase calls this winter average for snow plowing not too slow, not too busy.

Butch Sharkey of Sugarloaf had a busy morning. He walked to Turkey Hill to get gas for his snowblower.

"It's only a two-minute walk for me, not too terrible. Roads aren't the best right now. I plan on staying home today."

The snow closed schools in the area, so Sharkey says his children will help clear the snow.
