September 8, 2011 is a date thousands of people in this area will never forget.
That is when the Susquehanna River and some other rivers and creeks went over their banks causing historic flooding.
Six months later many communities are still trying to recover. One of those is Shickshinny in Luzerne County and on this day, demolition began on a landmark in town.
The Wells Fargo bank in Shickshinny was forced out after massive damage from the September flooding.
The building was still standing but won't be for much longer.
People gathered Thursday morning to watch the demolition of the building at the intersections of Route 11 and Route 239.
For years the building was a centerpiece of the downtown.
Onlookers were sad to see it go.
"I thought maybe they'd donate it to some historical society because it's such a historical building, somewhere. But that's progress I guess. I wonder what will go there once the demolition is done," said Joseph Knouse of Shickshinny.
A spokesperson for Wells Fargo said the company is putting in a handicap accessible ATM on the location plus parking and a green space with park benches.
Last month it was announced that people in Shickshinny won't have to survive without a bank for too much longer.
First Keystone Community Bank plans to begin construction on a bank at a different location in the borough as soon as possible.
According to Shickshinny police, demolition on the old bank building could last through much of the day, until about 3 p.m.
Until then, traffic in that area may be delayed or detoured.
