PITTSTON, Pa. — Northbound lanes of Interstate 81 will be closed overnight Tuesday as crews work on a bridge project along Suscon Road near Pittston.
"Well, the last month has been quiet they haven't been here in a month but when they first started working here, it was 24/7 they were working concrete, chipping away, blasting, and it was noisy middle of the night daytime," said John Fagotti, Pittston Township.
John Fagotti and other neighbors along Suscon Road in Pittston Township are gearing up for a few more noisy nights.
Crews are hoping to cross the halfway point on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's $7 million Suscon Road bridge project.
"The next few evenings based on weather, our contractor, which is Susquehanna Valley will be setting the beams for the bridge over the interstate," said Rich Roman, PennDOT.
According to PennDOT officials, the project will see both north and southbound lanes of Interstate 81 closed on different days throughout the week from 8:00 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Detours will be set up along state route 315.
"We are really hoping to have this project done by the late fall of this season," said Roman.
"Well, they are one step closer. I guess to get more traffic back on this road which I'm not looking forward to, but what could you do," said Fagotti.
While Fagotti has grown to like the silence due to his road being closed. He hopes the next few days of work don't create any issues.
"They were backed up and down this hill with the trucks, trailers, and the workers, etc. when they were dismantling the bridge and we'll see what happens the next day or so when I get to this side of the bridge and they're putting the new beams up," said Fagotti.
For the Interstate 81 North detour Tuesday night, you'll get off Exit 175 in Pittston and take Route 315 to the Interstate 81 entrance in Avoca.
Wednesday night when southbound is closed, you would get off at Exit 178 in Avoca and take Route 315 to the on-ramp in Pittston.
Officials say the project is expected to go until Friday morning but that could change depending on the weather.
