Update: Late Thursday afternoon, state police said the two investigations were connected.
HAZLETON -- One person is in custody in connection with an investigation in Luzerne County.
We know one person is in custody at the state police barracks in Hazle Township.
We don't yet know who it is or what they are charged with. But we do know the person is connected to one of the two investigations Thursday in the Hazleton area.
Police in Luzerne County have been investigating at two separate scenes, one near a school in Hazleton, and one about six miles away in Drums.
Police were on West 10th Street where neighbors say they've been since late Wednesday night.
Because of this investigation, school at the Hazleton Elementary Middle School, which is also known as The Castle was canceled for Thursday.
Many kids in Hazleton were ready to start their second day of school at The Castle but they were turned away. The Hazleton Elementary Middle School was closed, because of a police investigation at a home nearby on West 10th Street.
"Something happened," said Hazleton resident Carlos Rodriguez.
The Hazleton Area superintendent says the reason for the school closure was strictly precautionary.
State police, Hazleton police, and Butler Township police have been at the home on West 10th street all day.
State police tell us they are assisting Butler Township police but won't say what they are investigating.
But it's causing neighbors to speculate.
"When you see roads blocked off and seven or eight patrol cars around, you kind of tend to think it's some egregious, that something terrible happened," said neighbor Sam Correll.
School officials say they expect The Castle will be open for students and teachers Friday morning. But some people in the city say there could be another crime and they just feel bad for the kids who go the school there.
"We woke up in the morning with gun shots, people getting shot, drug overdoses, you name it!" said Jerry Kotsur.
At the same time as the investigation in Hazleton, police put up crime scene tape at a home about six miles away in Drums.
A state police forensic unit also showed up, along with Butler Township police.
We know that Samuel Vacante, 52, lives in that home. Butler Township police say he was last seen Monday night.
Police would not confirm if these two investigations are connected.
School at Hazleton Elementary Middle School is expected to go on as scheduled Friday.
