Preparations underway for Fireman's Picnic in Pittston Township

From towers to teacups, a long-standing tradition in Pittston Township is taking shape.

PITTSTON TOWNSHIP, PA — Rides are on the rise in Luzerne County. From towers to teacups, a long-standing tradition in Pittston Township is taking shape.

"A lot of the older people in the community probably remember it. A lot of the younger kids, it may be their first time. So, we're hoping to just create some memories and traditions for everybody," said Ben Pace, a Pittston Township firefighter.

The Pittston Township Fireman's Picnic was a staple in the community for years.

"This is how they built it; they built the fireman's picnic. Then, they moved up to Suscon for our big Northeast Fair. Then they stopped it back in 2017. Then a couple years later, the younger generation that was starting to take over with the fire department really led us and guided us through what we really wanted to do," said Jordan Consagra, the fire department president.

Now, it's back and bigger than ever, as Bryden Street will soon be buzzing. It's all hands on deck for the volunteer firefighters who make it happen.

"I love these guys like my family. When it comes down to the nitty gritty, we all just bite off more than we chew and get it done anyway," said Pace.

In the kitchen, the knives are hard at work. The first responders are taking on the role of chef this week. The firefighters are hand-making everything from the sausage and peppers to the pizza.

When asked about the sauce recipe, Consagra laughed, "It's a secret. It's an old Italian secret, one of the family members."

Others are trading in the grill for the games.

"I don't cook. I spin the wheel; that's my job," laughed Pace.

But it's not just all fun and games over the next five days, this tradition is a lifeline for the department.

"When our bell goes off in the fire house, it's somebody's bad day. So, we want to make sure we're doing everything for our residents and community alike. That we can help them to the utmost respect. And it all starts here with a picnic and trying to make a little extra money to make that happen," added Consagra.
