PLYMOUTH, Pa. — State police in Luzerne County said Wednesday they have a person in custody for a killing that happened in Plymouth.
Luzerne County emergency officials received the report of a homicide around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday on the 200 block of Gardner Street.
They say they found a woman dead, and a man has now been taken into custody.
State police call this an isolated incident; even so, neighbors are shaken up.
"I left around 7:15, 7:30. I walked out, and it was a whirlwind. I was very curious, concerned," said Gabrielle Long, who lives across from the home on Gardner Street.
"I was concerned that it had to do with her, being that she was the only one I knew across the street. So, I am a bit heartbroken," Long said.
The homicide investigation prompted a lockdown of Wyoming Valley West High School for a short period of time until state police announced that a man was taken into custody.
"It is a suspected isolated incident, with no threat to the public. Again. a suspect is in custody," said Trooper Bill Evans, Pennsylvania State Police.
Joyce Krongel has lived on this block of Gardner Street in Plymouth for six years.
"It's scary," Krongel said. It scares me that it could happen to anyone. We have to lock our doors at night, we now know, and really just be more cautious."
Krongel didn't know the victim very well but did see her out and about.
"We have seen her walking her dog. She used to walk her dog on the back road a lot. She was quiet and often keeps to herself, never bothered anybody."
State police have not released the identity of the victim and are still working to piece together what happened.
"Troopers on scene will probably be here the majority of the day. And will release more information as it becomes available. Investigation, again, very active investigation, a lot of troopers working around the clock," Trooper Evans said.
Troopers have not said what charges the suspect faces or when he might be arraigned.
