Plains Township ringing in New Year with brick drop

A New Year's Eve celebration in Luzerne County is back for another year, but it's not your run-of-the-mill ball drop.

PLAINS, Pa. — The brick is back. People in Plains Township rang in 2023 by watching a giant brick drop from the ceiling at the fire station. They'll do it for a second time to ring in 2024.

But why a brick?

The brick that drops on New Year's Eve is a replica of the brick wall that sits at the center of Plains Township. It's something Thomas Shubilla, a township commissioner, says brings people together all year long.

"We're a town that is not small by any means. We are shy of 10,000 people, but we do have a strong sense of community. We have a sense of people who know and look out for their neighbors," Shubilla said.

Organizers tell Newswatch 16 it was important to offer a family-friendly New Year's Eve celebration.

"It's a really good thing to have things on New Year's Eve that don't revolve around alcohol—things that you could bring any member of the family to, and they can have a good time whether they are 5 years old or 100 years old," Shubilla said.

The festivities in Plains Township will begin around 11 p.m. on New Year's Eve at the firehouse on Second Street. There will also be food and live music.
