PITTSTON -- A "pardon our appearance sign" in front of Pittston City Hall will soon be taken down. City officials are finishing up a $3 million renovation project, and to the delight of many people going in and out of the building, phase one of the project adds an elevator.

“It's wonderful. I'm always glad to use one when there's one available,” said Sue Williams.

Phase two is an energy-saving project that updated the heating and added central air conditioning to the building.

“We should be set for the future for the next 20 or 30 years,” said Joe Moskovitz, the city administrator.

He pointed out the new system was installed partly because it's energy efficient. It's expected to save the city money and overtime. Officials expect the savings to pay for part of the renovations.

“There are very few things that we do in life where your expenditures help pay for part of the improvements to your building, so that's why we want to do the energy-savings project,” he said.

The next step is to have the first floor repainted and add new carpeting to some rooms.

People doing business at Pittston City Hall say the upgrades are long overdue.

“It's been behind the times for years so it's nice that they're updating,” said Patrick Mitchell.

The project should be wrapped up in a few weeks.
