LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — It's quitting time for brothers Joe and Tom Petro, who own and operate Petro's Ace Hardware on Main Street in Jenkins Township.
"We've been at the point now for retirement. We've been in the business for 55 years. My brother and I decided, well, it's time for us to go on to other ventures in life while we still have strength and the ability to do," said co-owner Joseph Petro.
It's a decision that's making their customers feel blue. James Nalaschi says the Petros are wise and always willing to go above and beyond to help their customers with their home projects.
"I'm going to miss them. I'm going to cry. I mean, these guys are unbelievable," Nalaschi said. "This was the top-notch place to come to. And if you didn't have the knowledge. And Tom, don't forget Tom. Tom and Joe have the knowledge, and I'm sad. Believe me, I'm sad."
"Such a good customer base. I love every one of them. We had many, many projects that we've done, endless," Petro said.
But the Petros hold out hope for someone to come along with a bright idea.
"Hopefully, somebody will come in and say, 'Hey, I want to buy the business.' And I'm more than happy to help along to get it rolling," Petro said. "Still holding on to that dream because my dad started this with zero customers back in 1968."
Customers say if someone comes here to keep it open and continues the personal touch the Petros are known for, they'll rake in enough to make it worth it.
"As long as I'm alive, I'll be coming here if it's still here," Nalaschi added.
Customers have not been shy about their feelings about the brother's retirement and will faithfully come in until November 16, when the doors close for good.
