HARVEYS LAKE -- This summer has been one of the safest boating seasons on Harveys Lake, according to state officials.
Droves of lake-goers are still enjoying the late Labor Day holiday on the water.
For the Rieker family, summer isn't over until one last trip out to Harveys Lake for Labor Day weekend. The family travels from Chester County, about two hours away.
"I'm very sad because I like to go swimming in the lake, and I like playing with my friends, so I'm really sad that summer's over," said Kara Rieker.
"The summer's over!" said Mike Rieker. "Now the cold weather comes."
It's also the last trip out on the water this summer for Jeremy Miller and his family.
"Everyone kind of shuts down after Labor Day, so it's like the last hoorah," said Miller.
For these kids playing with their puppy Riley, they say they don't want the splish-splashing to end.
"I like the heat! And no school! Yeah, that too, and also my mom not complaining about the weather," said Weston Medvetz.
It took a while for Labor Day to get here. It's the latest it can be and folks at Harveys Lake say they appreciate what seems like an extra week of summer fun.
"Yes, it was a very nice, long warm summer," said Mike Rieker.
"It's one of the hottest Labor Days I've seen in quite a while," said John Cummings of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
He says it's also been one of the safest summers on the lake, with no major problems this year.
"It seems like the efforts that we've had over the years, boating education, the presence of law enforcement, and trying to educate people on the spot seem like it's really working."
For those who missed out on the summertime fun at Harveys Lake, the unofficial start to next summer, Memorial Day, is just 265 days away.
