PennDOT: Pittston bridge project could take years

Construction of a new bridge between Pittston and West Pittston could take years, according to a new timeline proposed by PennDOT.

PITTSTON, Pa. — It will be years until drivers in Luzerne County see a new bridge between Pittston and West Pittston.

The Firefighters Memorial Bridge, also known as the Water Street Bridge, closed in 2021 after failing inspection.

PennDOT is proposing to tear it down in 2026 but that depends on a gas line that needs to be removed.

Construction of a new bridge is proposed to start in 2027.

In the meantime, there are plans to install a traffic light on the West Pittston side of the Fort Jenkins Bridge.

That project is expected to start this fall.
